If you want to experience the glamour that California is famous for, Los Angeles and San Francisco have it all. You can find a Southern or Northern California vacation rental that lets you see it all! LA is teeming with stars and those looking for their big breaks. Aside from the usual star-spotting activities (the Walk of Fame, bus tours, movie studio tours), LA has a variety of other recreational and cultural activities that make it a truly great city. Museums like the Guggenheim have established LA as a world class art destination, and there are plenty of private galleries to wander around. Beaches abound, with Venice Beach being the most famous. Visit the boardwalk for an afternoon or evening. Places like Chinatown, Little India, and Thai Town contribute to the international flavors of the city. Be sure to check out some of the nearby cities like Long Beach Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Newport Beach! Head further south, and you’ll be at Dana Point and Capistrano Beach, a true California beach town!
San Francisco was the west’s boom town during the Gold Rush of the 19th Century. Today the city is still an internationally popular attraction and is notable for its great weather and numerous landmarks. Alcatraz, the cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Chinatown are just a few of the famous sights. There’s also a rich performing arts scene and the city is home to several world-class musical and theater groups. San Francisco is a very cosmopolitan town with great restaurants, shopping, and other entertainment options. Nearby you’ll find Calistoga, Castro Valley, and the Napa Valley all within an easy day’s drive of San Francisco.
San Diego is another city definitely worth a visit. It’s most famous for its zoo and beautiful weather, but has plenty of other sights worth a visit. Balboa Park and the Spanish missions reflect the history of the city, and the large naval presence gives military and boat fans plenty to see and do. Surfers love the city’s beaches and coastline. The city is also very close to Tijuana, so a day trip to Mexico is easily done. Mexican culture has heavily influenced the cuisine in San Diego and there are plenty of great restaurants. If you’re up for a drive along the coast, visit some of the beautiful beach communities like Carlsbad, Oceanside, and La Jolla.
If you’re looking for an adventure outside the city, California has plenty of options. Yosemite National Park, in the central part of the state, is over 1,100 square miles of wilderness, yet most visitors see only the 7-mile Yosemite Valley. That leaves hikers and backpackers plenty of options for exploring untouched wilderness. The park is also home to the Giant Sequoia trees, some of the oldest and tallest trees on Earth.
Other beautiful nature areas in the state include the area around Mount Shasta, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lake Tahoe, and the California White Mountains. Forests and scenic views abound, especially in Northern California. Visit Redding, Dunsmuir, and McCloud too see some of these spectacular views. There are also state parks and protected lands all up and down the coast, giving visitors a range of scenery, climate, and wildlife watching. The Mojave Desert and Death Valley are two very exciting places to visit as well. Deserts make up almost a quarter of California’s land. Death Valley is one of the hottest and driest places in the world. Death Valley National Park has a wide variety of plants and animals, however, and is a popular national monument.
Whether you choose Northern California or Southern California, your vacation will have a wide variety of places to go, things to see, and activities to do. There’s so much in the state that it’s hard to mention it all in one place. From the cities to the wildlife, the diversity of California is amazing and you’re sure to enjoy and remember forever any vacation you take in the Golden State.
